Polyester vs. Polyamide (Nylon): Which Fabric Is Right for Your Custom Branded Apparel?

Updated: Apr 24

If you're ordering custom branded apparel — polos for a trade show, performance tees for a corporate event, bags for a conference kit — you've probably seen fabric labels that say "100% polyester" or "polyamide/nylon blend" and wondered: does it actually matter?

It does. The fabric your logo goes on affects how long the garment lasts, how comfortable your team or attendees feel wearing it, how well it holds up to printing and embroidery, and ultimately whether it ends up in someone's regular rotation or the back of a closet.

Here's what you need to know — in plain language, not textile jargon.

What Are These Fabrics, Really?

Both polyester and polyamide (nylon) are synthetic fibers — meaning they're manufactured, not grown. Both are durable, lightweight, and widely used in branded apparel and promotional products. But they have meaningfully different strengths depending on what you're making.

Polyester is the most commonly used synthetic fabric in the world and the backbone of most promotional and performance apparel — think polo shirts, event tees, sport jerseys, and softshell jackets.

Polyamide (nylon) is the material you know from stockings, outdoor gear, parachutes, and high-performance bags. It's stronger and more elastic than polyester, but also more expensive and less common in standard branded apparel.

Polyester: Pros and Cons for Custom Branded Apparel

✅ Advantages

Durability that holds up to repeated washing. Polyester fibers resist shrinking, stretching, mildew, and wrinkles — meaning a branded polo or event tee will keep its shape and logo crispness even after dozens of washes. That's critical for wearability beyond the event itself.

Excellent for printing and embroidery. Polyester takes sublimation printing exceptionally well — producing vivid, full-color logos that won't fade. It also accepts screen printing and heat transfer cleanly. For corporate polos and sport jerseys especially, polyester is the standard for a reason.

Affordable at scale. Polyester blanks are less expensive than natural or nylon-based alternatives, which matters when you're ordering 50, 100, or 500 units for an event. You can get a polished, durable result without blowing the budget.

Easy care = more wearability. Machine washable, quick-drying, and wrinkle-resistant. Attendees and employees will actually wear it again — which is the whole point of branded apparel.

Moisture-wicking performance options. Performance polyester (used in sport polos, dri-fit tees, and athletic jackets) actively pulls moisture away from skin — making it a smart choice for Florida trade shows, outdoor events, or any warm-weather setting.

❌ Disadvantages

Less breathable than natural fibers. Standard polyester traps heat more than cotton or linen. In hot, humid Florida weather, this can be a comfort issue — though moisture-wicking polyester blends largely solve this.

Static cling in dry environments. Polyester can generate static electricity, which is more noticeable in air-conditioned indoor environments.

Environmental footprint. Polyester is petroleum-derived. If sustainability matters to your brand, look for rPET (recycled polyester) options — same performance, meaningfully lower environmental impact.

Polyamide (Nylon): Pros and Cons for Custom Branded Apparel

✅ Advantages

Exceptional strength and resilience. Nylon is stronger than polyester pound-for-pound, which is why it dominates in bags, outerwear, and outdoor gear. If you're ordering custom branded tote bags, backpacks, duffel bags, or jackets that need to survive real use, nylon is hard to beat.

Excellent elasticity. Nylon stretches and recovers without losing its shape — which is why it's used in athletic wear, hosiery, and compression garments. For form-fitting branded apparel or stretch-heavy applications, nylon performs better.

Highly abrasion resistant. Nylon withstands friction and wear far better than most fabrics. Branded nylon bags and accessories hold up to the daily abuse of travel, gym use, and trade show floors.

Quick-drying. Like polyester, nylon dries fast — making it a solid choice for outdoor events, water-adjacent activities, or travel gear.

❌ Disadvantages

Absorbs more moisture. Unlike polyester (which repels moisture), nylon absorbs it — meaning garments can feel damp and clingy in humid conditions. Not ideal for Florida outdoor events.

Heat sensitivity. Nylon can melt or shrink when exposed to high heat — which limits decoration options. High-temperature screen printing and some heat transfer methods require extra care on nylon fabrics.

Higher cost. Nylon blanks run more expensive than polyester equivalents. For large event orders, this adds up quickly.

So Which Should You Choose for Your Custom Merch?

Here's how to think about it based on what you're ordering:

Choose polyester if you're ordering:

  • Branded polos, performance tees, or sport shirts for events or trade shows

  • Softshell or fleece jackets with embroidered logos

  • Event staff or volunteer uniforms

  • Any apparel where print quality and budget efficiency matter most

  • Moisture-wicking gear for Florida outdoor events

Choose nylon/polyamide if you're ordering:

  • Custom branded bags, backpacks, or duffel bags

  • Outerwear or windbreakers for rough conditions

  • Stretch-based garments where elasticity is key

  • Higher-end travel accessories where longevity trumps cost

Not sure? Consider a poly-cotton blend. For the most comfortable, versatile branded tee or casual polo, a poly-cotton blend often hits the sweet spot — the breathability and softness of cotton combined with polyester's durability and print performance. Read our guide to poly-cotton blends →

What About Decoration — Printing and Embroidery?

This matters more than most people realize when selecting fabric for custom branded apparel:

  • Screen printing works beautifully on polyester and poly-cotton. It's the most common method for event tees, staff shirts, and trade show giveaways.

  • Sublimation printing requires 100% polyester — but delivers photographic-quality, all-over color that won't crack or fade.

  • Embroidery works on both polyester and nylon but requires stabilization on stretch-heavy nylon fabrics.

  • Heat transfer works on polyester; requires lower temperature settings on nylon.

Florida-Specific Consideration: Heat and Humidity

If your event is in Florida — or anywhere with heat and humidity — fabric choice matters more than it might in a cooler climate. Here's our recommendation for Florida events:

Performance polyester (moisture-wicking) is the clear winner for outdoor or warm-venue events. It keeps attendees and staff cool, moves sweat away from skin, and holds up in the heat.

Nylon bags are excellent in Florida — they resist mildew better than canvas alternatives and handle the rain and humidity of Florida weather without degrading.

Standard polyester or nylon without moisture-wicking properties will feel warmer than cotton, so for casual event tees where comfort is the priority, a 50/50 poly-cotton blend often performs best.
